Dot’s Guinea Pig Introduction Process

Sorry for such a graphic photo at such an early hour, but there has been a very recent and dramatic development at the HappyCavy Forever Home.

At 7:25 AM, just 30 minutes ago, Dot attacked Buttercup suddenly and without provocation. Dot has been living with the HappyCavy Herd for a few days now, and the attack came as a surprise to both Human and fuzzy alike.

This attack serves as a valuable reminder of the importance of Humans to stay vigilant, aware, and ready for anything when it comes to guinea pig introductions. Fortunately, the Humans had towels ready to separate the guinea pigs in case of an incident such as this one.

After the attack, Dot was immediately separated and Buttercup was quickly removed from the cage to care for her wounds.

This is a frustrating development in Dot’s introduction story, but it is one that The Humans have prepared for. Guinea pig introductions are unpredictable, and The Humans have decided that it is time for Dot to take a break from the Herd.

Dot’s guinea pig introduction will resume within a week or two, depending on Dot’s disposition.

Although disappointing, this latest altercations reminds us of the importance of being flexible and cautious when introducing guinea pigs.

Facebook friend Tonie posed an excellent question on Facebook about this HappyCavy situation:

Mouth wound from introduction attack

The response to Tonie’s question is below:

“That’s an excellent question, Tonie. My Humans try to be prepared for everything when adopting a new piggie, even if that means a new HappyCavy may not be able to live peacefully with the rest of the Herd.

Dot was rescued and has lived alone so far, so it’s possible she won’t get along with the rest of the HappyCavies. In that case, The Humans are ready to raise Dot in a separate C&C cage and will provide her all the love and attention afforded to the rest of us.”

Please keep checking back on this story as more details are shared about this unique introduction process.

I really hope that Dot will be able to get along peacefully with Buttercup. Will Dot’s cage be beside the HappyCavy home?

Thank you ♥ Yes, Dot’s home will continue to remain beside HappyCavy Home so she can continue to have some kind of companionship.

The Humans are contemplating using the good ol’ bath trick within the next several weeks as a last resort effort. Thanks!

Oh my god that poor thing. I’m totally dying looking at that picture — despite the wound her face is so hopeful and full of love, I totally just wanna reach thru the screen and give her the biggest hug ever.

I hope they get a long with her eventually…it would kill me to think that after getting to know you as owners shed have to get used to someone new…

I wish you guys only the best. <3<3<3sending Dot Xtra Hugs<3<3<3

It’s difficult to see, for sure. Fortunately, her wounds are healing very well. We want this to be her Forever Home, too! Thank you for your wishes!

Buttercup was quite frightened, but she settled down once she was cleaned up. She slept for quite a while afterwards, when started acting like normal, chutting around the Forever Home and playing with her sisters.
