Dot Gets a Guinea Pig Ramp

Dot takes a nap under her ramp

As many of you know, Dot the Guinea Pig has been separated from the rest of The Herd since her arrival in July 2012 and has been living in her own area inside the HappyCavy Forever Home. To catch up on Dot’s story, we spoke about the need to suspend introductions and permanently separate Dot in the post When Guinea Pigs Can’t Live Together.

Since Dot will be living by herself, some new cage arrangements had to be made. Dot’s tiny, make-shift cage space simply wasn’t providing her with the room she needed.

So, to increase the size of Dot’s living quarters, over the weekend The Humans added a guinea pig ramp and a second level to the already super-awesome HappyCavy Forever Home, just for Dot! This adds more room to Dot’s previous living quarters, making her new accommodations a roomy and comfortable 10 square feet.

Hammy, Feebee, and Buttercup also enjoy plenty of room (15 square feet), though no second level. This isn’t too much of an issue since, as each pig gets older, they seem to have less of a desire to run up and down ramps. Their loss, Dot’s gain!

Guinea pig cage second level

You may remember that the ramp and second level were removed from the HappyCavy cage after Dot was first adopted. So these new modifications aren’t entirely “new”, but they are a welcome change towards a more permanent solution for Dot’s living arrangements.

Guinea Pig Cage Size Standards

Solitary guinea pigs require 7.5 square feet (0.7 square meters) for adequate living space. Three guinea pigs require 10.5 square feet (1 square meter). Find out how much cage space your guinea pig family needs by reading Guinea Pig Cage Size Standards.

Guinea Pig Webcams

With Dot’s new cage set-up in place, The Humans have begun making plans to adjust some of the guinea pig web cam angles to give you a better look inside the HappyCavy Forever Home. Stay tuned for details about new web cam angles within the next few weeks!

There’s exciting news to share in the update to this post! You can read about it at Webcam Broadcasts Will Resume Next Week. *wheek!*

The Humans will also be taking photos of the new cage revision soon. Updates will follow!

What Do YOU Think?

What do you think of Dot’s new VIP access level? Will she use her new space to reign ruthlessly over the HappyCavy kingdom, or will she be a benevolent dictator and let democracy rule the cage?

Let us know what you think!

It’s hard to believe that she doesn’t just chew through the ramp or go over to get into the other pigs compartment. Must be fat and happy derp de derp.
