Celebrate National Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month

Published: 3/1/2013 | Author: HappyCavy | Updated: 6/21/2022

Happy National Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month 2013!

This March marks the eleventh consecutive celebration of National Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month. Declared by The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in March 2002, this commemorative month was established to raise awareness about guinea pigs in shelters and the proper care of guinea pigs.

Each HappyCavy is a rescued guinea pig and we always advocate adopting over buying. By choosing to adopt from a rescue instead of purchasing from a breeder or pet shop, you are giving a homeless guinea pig the chance at a second lot in life.

We firmly believe that it is far more responsible to get your next cavy at a shelter, humane society, or foster center rather than through individuals or businesses with for-profit motives.

Looking to welcome a new guinea pig into your home? Read about what supplies you should have before you bring home a new guinea pig.

To help support guinea pig rescues and raise awareness about the importance of adoption, the Humans of HappyCavy decided to take their love of all-things tech by starting a new website called wheek.it.

Donate Money to Guinea Pig Rescues

Background: A Guinea Pig URL Shortener

First and foremost, wheek.it is a guinea pig friendly URL shortener. That is, it can take long, ugly links and shorten them into cute, guinea pig friendly wheeks for easy sharing on websites like Facebook and Twitter. wheek.it is particularly useful for micro-blogging websites like Twitter which often limits the number of characters you can use in an update. The shorter your links, the more you can say.

Raise Money for Guinea Pig Rescues

The paws-down best part about wheek.it is that each time you share a wheek.it short link with your friends, you are helping to raise money for guinea pig rescues all over the world!

That’s because a unique referral partnerships with online retailers like Amazon.com and Joanne.com enables wheek.it to collect a portion of the money your friends spend at the links you share.

Listen to Hammy wheek each time you shorten a link using wheek.it! Hear Hammy wheek.

How The Fundraising Works

For example, let’s say Hammy share a link to an ergonomic food bowl she just had to share with her friends on Twitter:

Now, everyone knows Buttercup loves her some kitchen accessories, and an ergonomic food bowl is too much to resist. So she decides to visit the link and purchase a food bowl from Hammy’s link.

This is where the guinea pig fundraising magic happens. Because Amazon.com is a wheek.it participating shop, a guinea pig rescue will receive a portion of the money Buttercup spent on her food bowl. Instead of simply buying some a new bowl, both Hammy and Buttercup have both helped raise money for a guinea pig rescue!
